Georg Braun and Franz Hogenberg - Civitates Orbis Terrarum
[Picture]

The Earliest Comprehensive Collection of Realistic City Vedutas from all Over the World
16th Century

#

[T] he first volume of this large scale work appeared in 1572 under the title “Civitates Orbis Terrarum” and intended to convey an entirely new image of the world to everyone with a humanist education. The dean of the cathedral in Cologne Braun and the Flemish artist Hogenberg created the first comprehensive collection of realistic vedutas of cities in the whole world. Given our knowledge of medieval towns - before the destruction wrecked in the Thirty Years War and their reconstruction in the Baroque period - these excellent etchings are uniquely important, particularly since they provide not only faithful images of townscapes and landscapes but also other valuable information: genre scenes, costumes, ships and carts etc. In his highly anecdotal text, Braun describes the geographic situation, the history and economy of each city. The facsimile is based on one of the few lavishly coloured collector's editions from German libraries.

Complete coloured facsimile edition of the famous city vedutas in six volumes. In total c. 1600 pages in the original format of 41 x 28 cm. German commentary volume by Max Schefold.

Limited edition in leather with gold tooling: 300 numbered copies, Half-leather edition: cork and leather
