his monumental chart is among the greatest and finest works of 16th-century cartography. It covers the entire course of the Rhine and adjacent regions. Thousand place names, arms and explanatory texts make this map a unique documentary work of tremendous value. The names of important towns are given not only in their German but also in their Latin version, together with the names of the tribes who colonised the Rhine valley in Roman times. Vopelius' map of the Rhine dominated the art of cartography for over 150 years and provided a true picture of the area until the course of the river was newly surveyed.
