uan de la Cosa was a mariner and cartographer who made seven voyages to America, two of them with Columbus. On his return from Columbus' third voyage, he drew this famous map which showed the discoveries of Columbus' first three voyages and was the first representation of the American continent.

The original parchment, dated 1510, measures approximately 183 x 96 cm and is conserved in the Naval Museum in Madrid; the facsimile is a reduction to approximately 133 x 70 cm. The accompanying volume contains a study by Professor José Luis Comellas.
