illehalm is the significant later work of the greatest poet of the Stauffer era, created for the landgrave Hermann of Thuringla, and was written around 1215-18. The surviving single leaves made out in 1260 constitute the oldest witness to this manuscript and are thus truly invaluable. Coloured pen and ink drawings accompany the text of each page. The pictures are distinct in their wealth of gesture and symbolic force, and are truly unique within the illustration of German court epics. The volume contains all eleven fragments of this marvellous manuscript that have been discovered so far.
52 pages in the format of 32 x 28 cm including 20 facsimile plates in the original format. The 50-page German introductory text was authored by Ulrich Montag and includes a detailed description of the miniatures. Half-leather binding.
