[T]his volume covers one of the museums most important collections, that of Italian Painting from the 13th to the 16th Centuries.

In the introductory essay the author, Tatyana Kustodieva, known all over the world for her studies on Italian art, goes through the salient events in the history of Russian art collecting and the acquisition of the works of art. The 272 paintings, reproduced either in full or in part, are then analysed with a wealth of factual information. In addition to famous paintings by Leonardo da Vinci, Pontormo, Raphael, and Rosso Fiorentino, the collection boasts such important names as Andrea del Sarto, Beato Angelico, Domenico Beccafumi, Federico Barocci, Botticelli, Correggio, Ghirlandaio, Filippino Lippi, Pietro Lorenzetti, Simone Martini, Parmigianino and Perugino. There are also works by artists less well known to the general public but nevertheless of extraordinary historical importance. In the appendix the signatures which appear on some of the more important paintings are reproduced.

This comprehensive catalogue is an indispensable guide for the study of one of the worlds most important collections of Italian painting.
