he present volume describes, analyses and discusses the works of Spanish schools, from the
fifteenth to the nineteenth century, a formidable collection which includes, among others,
chef-d'oeuvres by El Greco, Velazquez, Ribera, Murillo and Goya. A detailed entry for
each of the paintings offers information about provenance, history, style and iconography,
presented on the highest level of recent scholarship. The entries are preceded by an essay
on the history of collecting Spanish paintings in Russia, and completed by a rich
bibliography.
The author, Ludmilla L. Kagané, is head of the Department of Spanish painting in the Hermitage State Museum.
