A Completely German, Rhymed Book
14th Century

#

[T]his volume belongs to the oldest and most extensive, completely German, rhymed books, a collection of sayings to the moral admonition or sociable conversation.

As a starting point in the book, the collection of sayings, that were in use in ancient Greece and were associated with the solemn rites.

The translation of many Arabic works into Latin in the 12th Century awakened in the West an interest in further exploration of the sayings. In Germany in the early 14th Century further analysis of the sayings was being undertaken. This volume falls into this transitional period. The formulation of the questions and answers gives the reader the opportunity to develop a serious belief in the rhymes on the one hand and sneering amusement on the other.
