first archaeological expeditions to a Maya site. In 1784, the Spanish king, influenced by
the Enlightenment, sent José Antonio Calderón, Antonio Bernasconi and Antonio del Río
to explore the ruins of Palenque. The notes and drawings of the first two are reproduced
in a volume 22 x 32 cm bound in parchment, as is the original in the Library of the Royal
Academy of History in Madrid. Captain del Río was accompanied by an artist, Almendariz
and the latter's 25 water-colours are reproduced in a second volume which is a copy of an
original in the Royal Palace Library.

by Professor Manuel Ballesteros Gaibrois of Madrid Complutense University.
