he Atlantic portion
of the Costa Rica Coastal territory was discovered by Christopher Columbus on
his fourth and last voyage. In the search of the channel, that to his belief
should communicate the Antilles Sea with that of the Oriental Indies, he
travelled along its coasts from October 1502 until April 1503. In his search
for the lands of Veragua, now named Costa Rica Christopher Columbus died
(1506) without achieving his aims that were achieved by his inheritors after
thirty years of litigations with the crown that gave the same territory 25
square leagues named the Ducado de Veragua .
