14th Century

#

[T]he Fraternization Book of St. Peter in Salzburg is one of the oldest and most venerable monuments of Bavarian-Austrian history. Begun around the year 784 in Salzburg and continued to be written until into the middle of the 13th century, the fraternization book is the oldest, completely preserved written testimony of the Christian's in Salzburg from the time of Bishop Virgil (around 784).

This famous codex A 1 of the archives of St. Peter in Salzburg contains the names of medal holders, priests and laymen, that joined together contractually in order to dedicate themselves to spiritual help through prayers. Bishop Virgil was a supporter of these prayer fraternizations. The manuscript is not only historically valuable within the church but also provides a unique history of the language and a paleo-graphic testimony.

In the file of known books of this type, the fraternization book of the abbey represents St. Peter in Salzburg as a particular figure. Its value doesn't consist alone in a wealth of significant historic, paleo-graphic and language historic material. In addition, it also provides a theological history phenomenon, that shows that Archbishop Virgil looked to as Christianity as a world-wide religion and it is evident that an Irishman was part of the Bavarian-Franconian arena.
